Specialty coffee in Cagliari

The habit of going out for coffee was brought to Cagliari by the Swiss. From the end of the eighteenth century young men from Ticino and Graubünden came over to Sardinia — the first ashore was Carlo Cima from the Blenio valley — and it was they who opened the pastry shops and cafés here: Caffè Elvetico, Caffè Svizzero. A café like that could be a stage and a cinema at the same time, because it was at the Elvetico, in 1905, that the city saw the first film in its history. The Svizzero sign on Largo Carlo Felice is not period styling, it is a birth certificate.
