Specialty coffee in Barletta

Beside the basilica of the Holy Sepulchre stands a bronze colossus over four and a half meters tall, known in the local dialect simply as Arè. Nobody knows for certain who it depicts — tradition insists on the emperor Heraclius, art historians lean toward Theodosius II. In 1309 Charles II of Anjou let the Dominicans melt down part of the statue for a bell for their church; the arms and legs went. New ones were made almost two centuries later, in a style so far from the ancient torso that Barletta now has a nameless emperor on somebody else's legs standing in its square.
