The northernmost trace of Roman soldiers in Central Europe isn't in a museum but behind hotel glass. In 179, during the war against the Germanic Quadi, the legate Marcus Valerius Maximianus had an inscription carved into the rock below the castle, in which 855 soldiers of the Second Legion at Laugaricio honor the emperors' victory. Today the rock adjoins the Hotel Elizabeth: you walk up a floor from the lobby, sit down in an armchair and read Latin through a glass wall. Admission is free and the front desk is open around the clock, so you can meet Marcus Aurelius's legionaries here even at three in the morning.
