Malcesine's most famous tourist went straight into custody. In September 1786 Goethe sat down in front of the Scaliger castle and started sketching it, and the locals decided he was drawing the walls for the Austrian emperor Joseph II and sent for the podestà. He was travelling under the false name Philipp Möller at the time, so what got him out of it was not a document but his own tongue. He walked free and wrote the whole thing up, and the town that wanted to lock him up has been living ever since off the fact that it did not.
