When the Košice–Bohumín Railway was built in the late 19th century, the tracks were laid eight kilometres south of Levoča. Locals like to say the townspeople wanted to keep their cabbage fields; historians offer something more prosaic: the craftsmen were afraid the trains would bring in cheaper goods. The factories and the newcomers went to Spišská Nová Ves instead, and in Levoča, where nothing was being built, what may be the largest amount of original stonework and carpentry in Slovakia survived. The old town was saved by cabbage or by fear of competition — depends who you ask.
