Until the mid-20th century Velká Bíteš had around 1,800 residents. In 1950 a branch of the Brno engineering works opened here, and the little town grew to more than five thousand people. The factory started out making pneumatic hammers for steelworks and mines; today it makes APUs, the small turbines that start aircraft and ten-ton helicopters. Only four companies in the world hold EASA certification to produce these units, and one of them sits in a town of five thousand.
