In 1967 Ústí nad Orlicí opened the world's first spindleless spinning mill: a hall without a single window, holding ten BD 200 machines in which a rotor did the work of the spindle. By the end of the 1970s there were more than seven thousand of these machines in over forty countries, and today rotors spin roughly one in three of the world's staple yarns, denim yarn included. The local research institute won an award for the invention from the Textile Institute in Manchester. The real one, that is - Ústí itself used to be called the Manchester of East Bohemia.
