About coffee in Svitavy
One of the finest houses in Svitavy was built by a man who had to flee the town. After the Revolutions of 1848, Oswald Ottendorfer left for New York, started out there as a labourer, and later married the owner of the New-Yorker Staats-Zeitung, one of the biggest German-language newspapers in America. From Manhattan he sent nearly a million gulden back to his hometown: for a hospital for the poor, an orphanage and a library of 22,000 volumes, the largest German library in Moravia. After the war the collection was looted and only 5,500 volumes survived, while the twin library Ottendorfer gave to New York is still open today.
