For almost 170 years Sušice lived off matches, and the whole industry grew out of one woman's know-how. Mařenka, a maid in Vienna, sometimes helped cook up the paste for match heads there, and it was from her — his future wife — that the joiner Vojtěch Scheinost learned the recipe. SOLO matches went on to travel the world, and merchants in the tropics tested them their own way: they licked the head and then tried to strike it. The last match was made here in 2008, production moved to India, and the factory itself was torn down.
