About coffee in Strakonice

For the whole of the 19th century, Strakonice made hats for the Muslim world: fezzes from this small Czech town were worn from Istanbul across the Middle East to Cairo, and even in India. At its peak, the Fürth family's factory turned out 1.2 million of them a year and ran its own branch in Cairo's Ghourieh quarter. It took a single decree from Atatürk banning the fez for a company that had been breaking profit records only a few years earlier to end the year in the red. Fezzes are still made here today; they just go mostly to Africa.
