In December 1805 the Blümegen family's château in Šlapanice became a French field hospital. Here the surgeon Jean Dominique Larrey and his men took off a limb in two to four minutes, dulling the pain by cooling the wound or with tincture of opium, since morphine had been produced for the first time only that same year. On the morning of 3 December the château still held a hundred and ninety wounded men who were too badly hurt to be moved. Today those walls house students from the local grammar school.
