About coffee in Prachatice
Prachatice was built on salt, carried by packhorses from Passau across the Šumava. In the best years as many as 1,200 horses a week passed through town along the Golden Trail, and more than three million litres of salt from Alpine deposits arrived here every year. The packhorse drivers, soumaři in Czech, went back to Bavaria loaded with grain, malt, hops and beer. The gold in the trail's name was never in the mountains, but in the merchants' ledgers.
