About coffee in Pec pod Snezkou
Pec is Czech for furnace, and one of the local furnaces went by the blunt name of the poisonous one. In the 17th century it processed arsenic ore mined beneath Sněžka, and the arsenic went into paints used to coat the wooden hulls of ocean-going ships. In its best years the works turned out 120 tonnes of arsenic annually, and its biggest customer was the port of Hamburg. The end came not from the mountains but from the sea: when Hamburg started sheathing hulls in metal plate, the furnace below Sněžka went cold, and nobody ever fired it up again.
