Uncle Pepin, a former soldier and cobbler, came to the Nymburk brewery for a fortnight and stayed for the rest of his life. Living there at the time was ten-year-old Bohumil Hrabal, who years later wrote about the brewery in Postřižiny (Cutting It Short). When Pepin got too loud, the foreman would shut him inside an empty boiler to chip off the scale by the light of a bulb, and his singing still carried up over the chimney. The brewery is still running and brews beer under the Postřižiny brand, so it pours the book about itself into pint glasses.
