Before the Second World War this town of not quite twenty thousand was considered the unofficial world capital of hat-making. The Hückel family were the first in the Habsburg monarchy to harness a steam engine to making hats, and by the late 1930s their factory employed three thousand people. A thousand machines were driven by four boilers that went through three wagonloads of coal every day. The company has been going since 1799 and is now called Tonak, and the local hat museum is named "Nechte na hlavě" — "Keep It On".
