About coffee in Nachod

In Czech literature, Náchod goes by a second name: Kostelec. That is what Josef Škvorecký called his hometown in his novel The Cowards, where the last week of the war is seen through the eyes of a twenty-year-old grammar-school boy more taken with jazz and girls than with heroic struggle. When the book came out in 1958, reviewers called it a rotten fruit and a mangy pup, President Novotný himself attacked it on the radio, and Škvorecký lost his editorial job. The Port Arthur restaurant, where the novel delivers its famous line about the revolution being postponed indefinitely, is still open — billiards and wartime stained glass included.
