Jičín's most famous resident never existed: Rumcajs, the shoemaker from Václav Čtvrtek's stories, who made shoes honestly for nine years until Mayor Humpál ran him out of town. It was over feet — Humpál was proud of his big feet, and Rumcajs blurted out that he had seen bigger. The Řáholec forest, where the exile turned highwayman, was made up too, until local foresters gave the name to a hectare of real woodland outside town and entered it on the forest stand map. It stayed there for almost thirty years, until the foresters' joke got out of the forestry office.
