The American scientist Oskar Baudisch found that the water here had the same composition as the springs at Warm Springs, Georgia, where polio patients were treated. The spa adopted their treatment methods, and in 1935 it became the first centre in Europe to treat the after-effects of polio. And yet for its first few centuries nobody bathed in the spring at all — its water turned the wheel of an iron hammer mill.
