Most caves are carved by water seeping down from the surface. The Hranice Abyss formed the other way round — from below, hollowed out by warm water saturated with carbon dioxide. Its flooded chambers are still full of natural mineral water at up to 22 degrees. In 2022 an underwater robot went down 450 metres without reaching the bottom; add the dry section and it comes to almost 520 metres, a world record among flooded abysses. Where the bottom is, nobody knows — the water's temperature and chemistry suggest it could lie as much as a kilometre below the surface.
