About coffee in Havlickuv Brod
From the 14th century this town was called Německý Brod, and it got its new name in a single day. On 5 May 1945 representatives of the political parties put forward one proposal after another: Smilův Brod, Stříbrný Brod, Moravský Brod or Brod nad Sázavou. The winner was mayor Antonín Šouba's idea: he stepped out onto the town hall balcony and, in a fiery speech, announced the new name to the crowd, in honour of the writer Karel Havlíček Borovský. Plenty of Czech towns changed their names that year, but Brod got there first.
