Just outside Frenštát two shafts were sunk in the 1980s, the deeper of them reaching down more than a kilometre to a seam estimated at 1.6 billion tonnes of hard coal. Mining never started. From 1991 the mine was mothballed, and for over thirty years it had to be ventilated and pumped dry, even though the coal had long since been written off. Today the shafts are filled in, and of the two green headframes, one is to become a brewery and the other a lookout tower.
