In 1966 workers digging a trench for a water main came upon the graves of fourteen people: they lay on their sides or face down, hands tied, pinned under stones. Some of the graves were later reopened so the dead could be beheaded. For decades people talked about a vampire cemetery; today archaeologists lean instead toward executed convicts and suicides nobody wanted buried in consecrated ground - and that version is no less grim.
