About coffee in Babice
Babice is where shelf-stable Májka is made, regarded as the most important pâté in the Czech Republic; the chilled version comes from neighbouring Kunovice. It takes its name from the Hungarian "májkrém", once imported into Czechoslovakia, though strictly speaking it isn't pâté at all: the tin says "lahůdkový vepřový krém", because it has less liver and more pork. Under socialism every producer had to stick to the same mandatory standard, and the brand wasn't registered until the 1990s. The village's factory history, as it happens, began with something sweet: right after the First World War, Hynek Varmuža opened a jam and plum butter works here.
