A kilometer and a half from the promenade, behind the fence of Woliński National Park, stand five bison: Poznaniak II, Polikosia, Posawa, Pozowa and Polanin II. The same syllable at the start of every name is no accident - in the European pedigree book, bison born in Poland get names beginning with Po. The records are that meticulous because the entire species descends from twelve animals that survived in zoos after the last free-living bison of the Białowieża Forest died in 1919. The enclosure outside Międzyzdroje was opened to widen that gene pool, and more than a hundred and sixty thousand people a year come to see it.
