Specialty coffee in Konin

On 24 February 1984 an excavator at the Jóźwin open-cast mine near Konin lifted bones out of the ground that were taken at first for a mammoth. It was a straight-tusked elephant from some hundred thousand years ago: four metres tall, eight tonnes, around fifty years old when it died, and the skeleton almost complete - Europe knows only a handful of sites like it. The same ground gave up amber from the sandy overburden and a nearly two-metre piece of xylite, a tree trunk from a dozen or so million years ago, which went to the museum in Konin. The open-cast pits are finishing work one by one, so the list of things the mine brought up alongside the coal is closing right now.
