The oldest residents of Bartoszyce are two stone figures carved by the Old Prussians of the Bart tribe - the same tribe the town is named after. They are about a thousand years old, and in town people simply call them the Bartki; the names Bartel and Gustebalda only came along before the war. Bartel, the taller one, with a drinking horn in his right hand, stood for centuries inside the church of St. John the Baptist, while in 1706 Gustebalda guarded the entrance to an inn by the Brama Królewiecka. Then they were shifted from the market square to the school, from the school up to the castle hill, until they ended up on a small green at the junction of two streets - pagan statues that have moved around town more often than its inhabitants.
