For centuries Salerno was the address Europe wrote to for its health. The medical school here let women teach - Trotula taught obstetrics here at a time when universities were shutting their doors to women for centuries to come. Her most famous work was not a treatise but a poem: advice on food, sleep and herbs written down in hexameter so it could be memorized. From 364 lines it grew to over three thousand and went through forty editions before 1501, and one of its questions ran: why should a man die who has sage growing in his garden?
