Specialty coffee in Nowy Sacz

In 1958 the Council of Ministers agreed that Nowy Sącz and the surrounding district could develop in their own way, and gave the local authorities powers the rest of communist Poland could forget about. The effect was counted up quickly: turnover in local catering went from a million złoty to a hundred and eighty million in three years. Of the district's 185 villages, 156 got training and credit for taking in tourists - agritourism, invented several decades before anyone got round to calling it that. The Sącz experiment was only extinguished by the administrative reform of the 1970s, but the conviction that here you do your own thing without asking Warsaw has stayed.
