The fire that wiped out Feltre in 1510 was set by the residents themselves: they laid powder at the gates so that the imperial troops taking the town would have no way out. That is how Jörg von Liechtenstein, the commander of those troops, described it in a letter — everything was burning, the fire was terrible. The blame was pinned on the invaders until, in the late nineties, a historian from Innsbruck translated the letter and a local journal printed it. Venice rebuilt the town from scratch and had the facades of the new palazzi covered in frescoes: Feltre burned to the ground and came back as an urbs picta, a painted city.
