In 1787 Ján Vagač, a butcher and sheep-butter trader from Stará Turá, founded a bryndza factory in Detva: the first in Slovakia and most likely the first in the world. Before getting it going, he spent a long time experimenting with sheep's cheese from mountain huts, drying it, rolling it out and salting it over, until he got what he was after. His descendants founded the town's first football club and built a swimming pool, and the family motto ran: honesty will take you far. And far they went: the communists nationalised the bryndza works and threw the whole family out of Detva.
