For nearly sixty years Bari smelled of roasting coffee: the Saicaf plant on via Amendola ran the first automatic coffee roasting and packing machines in Italy. The company was founded before the war by a local lawyer, and the first sacks went to the family café on Corso Cavour; the red packets later reached the whole of southern Italy, Germany and the Balkans. A few years ago the plant was pulled down, roasting moved mainly to Bologna, and the company was taken over by Massimo Zanetti's group. There is a car dealership on the site today — the name stayed, the smell did not.
